Sample Path Review
Swimmer: "Jordan" (fictional), Class of 2028, club swimmer and high school varsity
Events: 100 and 200 free, 100 back
Goal stated by parent: Swim in college at a school where Jordan can also study engineering.
1. Where things stand
Here's where Jordan stands (fictional times): 100 free 51.9 SCY, 200 free 1:52.4 SCY, 100 back 56.8 SCY. Times have dropped every season. The 200 free is the strongest event for Jordan's age. The clock says the 200 free and 100 back are worth the extra effort next season.
2. Meets that matter this year
- Pick one championship-level meet in the long course season and one in the short course season. Check the current USA Swimming time standards for the exact cuts.
- Use mid-season meets as time trials in the two focus events.
- Skip the travel meets that don't give Jordan a real shot at a best time. A long drive for one swim is a lot of snacks for not much.
3. College levels to explore
A fair range to research is D3, D2, NAIA, and a few D1 programs. This is an opinion based only on the times above. It can't predict what any coach will decide. Compare Jordan's times with the recent rosters and results pages of the schools on the list.
4. Coach email checklist
- A short subject line with name, grad year, and main event
- Two or three best times, with the course noted
- One sentence on why this school, specific to the program
- A link to a results page and your club coach's contact info
- A real question about academics or team culture
Before Jordan contacts any coach, check the current contact rules for Jordan's grade at ncaa.org and with the club coach.
5. Next steps for the next 90 days
- Build a list of 15 schools across levels. Start with academics.
- Ask the club coach for honest feedback on training and event focus.
- Send first emails only after you've confirmed the rules allow it.
6. Questions to ask on a visit
- What does a normal training week look like?
- How do you support swimmers in demanding majors?
- Beyond times, what do you look for in a teammate?
No review can promise a scholarship or a roster spot. This sample is only an illustration.
